South West Tasmania

After our adventures on Bruny Island and safely bracing the “high seas” of the 20 minute ferry crossing, we focused our attention on the not often talked about South West of Tasmania. We weren’t really sure where to start, so we immediately decided to make our way to the most southern pub in Australia, the Seaport Hotel.

Southern frothies

On our way, we found one of our favourite free camps sitting right on the edge of the Huon river with almost mystical views! We also learned how to shuck a oyster using a screwdriver and Steve lost two fishing lures and added to his feet cuts.

Not the worst campsite!

From there, we checked out some natural hot springs that didn’t quite knock our socks off as they had just piped them into a tiled swimming pool full of kids. With showers not always being close by, we thought that it would be rude if we didn’t have a dip though. We also have a goal for this trip of finding a platypus in the wild as neither of us had seen one and the search was on, but we left the the so called Platypus walk at the hot springs empty handed. I’m saying this, the rainforest walk was quite peaceful and something we were starting to notice was that if you didn’t count the temperature, you could be in any tropical rainforest around Australia!

North Queensland or Tassie?

From here, we made it to our southern pub and decided that fried food wasn’t great for our stomachs after not having it for a while. Very happy they had bathrooms on the premises.

From here, we were realising that the South West wasn’t the easiest place to access without going on a mega walk that we weren’t exactly that keen or set up for. We therefore decided to just drive to the most Southern point accessible by car in Cockle Creek which was a nice place, but packed with campers and with the weather a little bit dark and blowy, we moved on. But not before getting a photo with a big whale.

Rather large whale

In general, we left the South West a little disappointed, but open to come back again and spend a little longer trying to explore deeper.

Time to explore some waterfalls next!
