The Nullarbor

Well, it was finally time. Time to tackle the dreaded Nullarbor with two people who don’t generally love long non-scenic drives…

Firstly, the whole planning of the drive was complicated, as we had to figure out where to camp and where to fill up diesel. The second point being the most important, as I’m not sure anyone would be keen for $2.90/L at the Nullarbor Roadhouse!

You’ll be waiting at those prices

So, we decided to spend the first night, technically not on the Nullarbor, at a small fishing town called Fowlers Bay. Although the caravan park people were lovely, this takes the cake as the place with the most flies/capita we’ve seen so far!

After a decent nights sleep and a few morning swallowed flies, it was time to start tackling the Nullarbor itself! When I say that this is the most boring long drive of all time, this is not hyperbole, hours and hours and hours of straight road with not much to look at unless you like scrub. But, we were on our way to WA and that makes it worth it, right…

On the way to WA

We did however, have one thing that we were very keen to see and that was the Nullarbor Cliffs and boy besides from the flies that had followed us from Fowlers, this was certainly a highlight! These are some of my favourite drone photos and videos I have taken so far. We weren’t quite game enough to camp on these cliffs, so we kept driving after stopping for lunch and made our way to the border.

What a view!
Happy I didn’t crash the drone here!

The border crossing was a slightly stressful affair. The WA police are pretty thorough about checking people and searching cars, very different to the almost too easy Tassie entry. Having little phone service makes getting Covid vaccination records slightly difficult, but we eventually managed to sort it out and we were into WA! We camped for the night a few hours drive past the checkpoint at rest stop just off from the side of the road. Although slightly sketchy, we had a good nights sleep, likely aided by the time going back 2 hours. I’m going to claim jet lag!

The long drive continued and we passed the time with games of car cricket and Steve adding to his Spacey Jane listening experience. It was a relief when we finally made it to a major town, in Norseman and we finally felt like we were properly in WA. We decided to drive all the way down to Esperance as we had had enough of the scrub desert for a little while and when we finally got there, it was so good to see the sea!

Watch out for camels!

Time for some beaches!!
