Driving through Coral Bay on our way up to the campsites on Ningaloo Station, we were reminded why we didn’t spend $65 a night for a shoebox unpowered site at the caravan park. Coral Bay was absolutely chockas and even more of a crime was the $8.80 packet of Tim Tams at the IGA… unaustralian if you ask me. We did however get a nice water fill up at the resort, but unfortunately no Tim Tams for Steve.

Moving on, it was back on the corrugation and heading towards our first camp on Ningaloo Station, Winderabandi. We knew it was a pretty good spot when this was the view to welcome us!

We had a lovely time camping right on the beach, protected from the wind by the curving bay. We even managed to fly the drone out and capture some pretty special shots of the reef and the special blue water.

Steve even managed to paddle the SUP out to the edge of the reef in the photo above (don’t stress mum) and had the amazing, but slightly unsettling experience of a whale breaching about 15 metres away! He even had a little fishing luck, but not enough to provide dinner and the cost of gear lost against the price of just buying the fish continued to rise. Not a bad place to be doing it though I guess.
We also went out for our first much anticipated snorkel on the reef, using the SUP as a taxi and it definitely lived up to expectations! The coral was so alive and teeming with little fish! The ends of the coral branches gleamed bright blue and the water wasn’t even cold!

Moving on from here, we headed slightly down the coast to our next beach camp, South Lefroy Bay. The weather was forecasted to turn a little windy the next day, so Steve decided to go out for a fish and managed to catch a few squid for dinner! Downside was the permanent black staining of the SUP and Steve’s shorts after a squid decided he wanted to try painting and used Steve and the board as a canvas.
We also managed to capture some pretty cool drone shots of the area before the weather set in.
