Broome, WA

Back on the road after some amazing beach camping, we had a long drive ahead of us to Broome. The weather was getting hotter and hotter the further north we headed and after a sweaty day of driving, we decided accommodation with a shower was in order. We decided on an iconic Australian roadhouse in the form of Sandfire roadhouse and were surprised to find instead of guard dogs or kangaroos welcoming us, a flock of peacocks were patrolling the drive way! Outback roadhouses never disappoint and we a good nights sleep underneath the shade of a mango tree.

Arriving in Broome the next day, we felt like we had properly entered Northern Australia. We were shocked, both in good and bad ways with the town. Broome is a town of contradictions, on one side you have beautiful resorts and stunning Cable Beach sunsets and on the other, you have people living on the side of the road with crime reportedly rampant. We’ll try and focus on the good experiences and things we saw, but it is definitely worth noting.

First up, we felt it would be rude if we didn’t catch a sunset at Cable Beach and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Cable Beach

After being reassured that you didn’t need to worry about crocodiles, we even managed to go for a swim and it was the perfect refresher after a long drive. We even managed to sneak in some cheeky fish and chips and ice cream as a treat!

We stocked up with supplies and headed up to the start of the Dampier peninsula for another coastal camp, specifically, Quandong Point. It was on this drive that we first fully experienced the red dirt and sand experience, as you can see in the background of this amazing Steve dance performance.

We were lucky enough to stumble upon this amazing campsite all to ourselves!

We again experienced the magic of North West WA tides, with the ocean disappearing in the evening and creating a maze of rock pools. Again, we used this as a bathing opportunity and also a great spot to fly the drone over!

We spent a few days here and although the days were hot, we had a great time and managed to relax a little bit. Steve’s fishing attempts were not fruitful from a food providing standpoint, but at least he had fun and we even had some hermit crab visitors.

Leaving this spot, we headed further up the peninsula and in classic Lauren and Steve fashion, booked a last minute campsite at Pender Bay. We didn’t really know what to expect, but the reviews were good and we’re always up for an adventure!

We arrived safely after navigating some relatively challenging sand tracks and were welcomed with a lovely campground providing showers, washing machines and an awesome little beach.

Pushed by Lauren, we got up very early the next morning and were rewarded with a beautiful little sunrise which we tried to capture with this little video.

We had heard good things about the fishing here and Steve vowed he was going to provide dinner! In a strange turn of events, he was successful and managed to catch some parrot fish and garfish. Lauren, a noted hater of fishing, even joined in and managed to be very adept at catching some garfish to add to our haul and we had a great feed of fish and chips for dinner.

We had a lovely time at Pender Bay, but it was time to move on and start the most challenging part of our adventure so far, the Gibb River Road! Stay tuned!
